Maharashtra linked rent agreement registration with the police network so landlords needn't visit a station. What to submit, and why skipping it is risky.

Every landlord in Mumbai must tell the police about a new tenant. For years that meant a trip to the local police station. Maharashtra has now integrated tenant verification with the registration of leave and licence agreements.
As reported, details include the tenant's name, address and photograph, references from two people who know the tenant, and the e-registered agreement.
Mumbai Police have filed FIRs against property owners who didn't report tenants, under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with disobeying an order issued by a public servant. Reports said non-compliance could lead to up to a year in jail.
Register the agreement, complete police intimation, and keep the acknowledgement. It protects you as much as it protects the police.
You can't stand in a queue from abroad, and you shouldn't have to. Your property manager or a representative with the right authority can handle registration and intimation. We do this for every tenancy we place.
Police verification is also useful for you. A registered agreement and police record can be needed for passport, bank and other address verifications. See using your rent agreement for passport verification.
Landlords must inform the police about tenants. Mumbai Police have filed FIRs under BNS Section 223 against owners who didn't.
